A "Fill Entire Browser - Illusion" layout is similar in concept with the regular "Fill Entire Browser - Traditional" layout except we don't base the site width off of the browser. Generally with this layout the main part of the site has a fixed width and we use various graphical elements to make it look like we are using the entire browser. This example shows the header background color extending beyond the width of the main site to fill the entire width of the browser.

A "Fill Entire Browser - Illusion" layout is similar to a traditional layout in that it works well for all kinds of organizations. Actually a centered, traditional site often will give illusion of filling the entire browser because the empty spaces on the left and right frame in the site.

A "Fill Entire Browser - Traditional" layout is one of the most complicated layouts to build because the width of the site is based on the width of the browser. That means the width is always subject to change which takes away a lot of the control over the layout from the designer.

A "Fill Entire Browser - Traditional" layout is best for sites that have a lot of content with very few graphics. This layout works great for blogs, search engines, classified, and newspaper sites. Up until just about a year ago Google used to use this layout. Craigslist.org (the listing pages) and drudgereport.com are currently using this layout. Very few sites use this layout and use it well.

The "Site In A Box" is just like it sounds... It is a box that is usually centered horizontally in the browser. It can be centered vertically or it can be given a fixed position from the top. The bottom of the site usually stays at a fixed interval from the top no matter how much text or content is on the page. Usually a scroll bar is used to make it possible to see text that would extend beyond the vertical dimensions.

The "Site In A Box" layout generally gives a refined, simple look and feel to the site and works well for artistic sites for artists, musicians, ministers, and certain types of ministries. It also works well for churches that want to have an upscale appearance. Sites that are going to have a lot of content (text) will not work as well with this kind of layout.
